John was born on 12 October 1751 in Readington, Hunterdon, New Jersey. He was baptized on 10 November 1751 in the Readington Reformed Dutch Church. His parents were William Van Fleet and Marytje Aten.
The SAR lists his service: "Was in service as Capt in Colonel Mark Thompson's 1st Regt, Sussex County, NJ, Militia, 1776 and 1777 elected First Major, Colonel Jacob Wests Regt, Sussex County, NJ Militia, June 6, 1777 in service at Elizabethtown, under Colonel Frederic Frelinghuysen August 10 to September 23, 1777, Commanded a guard of 18 men July 25, 1778 - on rolls August 6, 1778. Received certificate, 142 amounting to 45 pounds 12 shillings for the depreciation of his continental pay Sussex County, New Jersey Militia, during the Revolutionary War. S[1]
He died on 4 March 1831 in New Jersey. He is buried in the Lebanon Reformed Cemetery, Hunterdon, New Jersey.
